St.George`s Day 2005 Parade.

24-Apr-05
This years event took place on Sunday 24th April 2005

The numbers began to grow very quickly and the roads around Hall Green School in West Bromwich slowly began to turn into a sea of red and white. The neighbours along the route once again got into the spirit by decorating houses, garages and gardens with the flag of St George.

As the Patriotic songs began to start the crowd joined in with the singing before Carl Chinn introduced our special Special Guests.

(Many thanks to Bob Taylor and Young Mutley)

As Land of Hope & Glory finished, St George on his white horse took the 10,000 strong crowd forwards for the one hour walk to Dartmouth Park.

Many, many organisations attended the parade, including the following

  • West Midlands Fire Service Band.
  • Beeches Cadets
  • Corby Pipe Band
  • Bagpipe and Drum Band
  • Territorial Army
  • Sea Cadets
  • Air Training Corps
  • Army Cadets
  • Scouts

As the numbers grew along the the parade more houses along the route displayed the flag with pride as the sun shone onto us all. Eventually the 10,000 Patriots arrived at exactly 11:45am to be led into the Park by our very brave and noble veterans.

Upon arrival at the Park the following was on offer to entertain an even bigger crowd,

  • Radio WM Road Show, (including Carl Chinn presenting his show live from the Park)
  • BBC Radio WM presenter Jenny Jones compered the event at Dartmouth Park from 11.45am
  • Pat Collins Funfair.
  • Medieval Reinactment - Knights of the Realm.
  • Archery
  • www.englandclobber.com- Souvenir Stall.
  • Dante Ferrara.
  • Sir Lupin of Pipwither.
  • Punch and Judy.
  • Langley Band.
  • The Dance Depot.
  • Morris Dancing.
  • Arms of Old - Medieval Archery and sale of goods.

  • Community Singing.

Just Don`t Say You`re English.....

18-Jan-05
By a proud Englishman....

Goodbye to my England! So long my old friend!

Your days are now numbered, being bought to an end.

To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh, that`s just fine.

But don`t say you`re English, that`s way out of line.

The French and the Germans may call themselves such,

As may Norwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch:

You can say you are Russian, or maybe a Dane,

But don`t say you`re English, ever again.

At Broadcasting House, that word is taboo,

In Brussels they`ve scrapped it, in Parliament too,

Even schools are affected, staff do as they`re told,

They mustn`t teach children about the England of old.

Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw-

Do the pupils not learn about them anymore?

How about Agincourt, Hastings, Arnhem or Mons

When England lost hosts of her very brave sons?

We are not Europeans, how can we be?

Europe is miles away, over the sea,

We`re the English from England, lets all be proud -

Stand up and be counted - shout it out loud!

Let`s tell our government - and Brussels too -

We`re proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue.

Fly the flag of St.George or the Union Jack,

Let the world know - WE WANT OUR ENGLAND BACK!!

17-Jan-05

Where it all began....

Some five years ago in 1999 a group of residents local to the Stone Cross area of West Bromwich had a burning desire to display their appreciation and love for their country and celebrate their heritage and acknowledge St. Georges Day, the occasion and to pay homage to our heroes and glorious past.

Being totally inexperienced in such matters, much deliberation and many discussions took place as to the most appropriate way to honour such an occasion, numerous ideas were considered and dispensed with before agreeing on a St. Georges Parade, after all the English had always marched, their ancestors had marched to many proud and famous victories, therefore they would march ... but from where?.... to where?

It was decided that the parade would be from Stone Cross to The Hall End Tavern, the news was spread by word of mouth and approx 150 pioneers set of on what was to be the inaugrial parade, satisfied with their efforts then quenched their thirst. The first march was not without it`s problems and our gallant lads had to overcome objections and obstructions from council and police alike..... but you can`t keep a proud Englishman down !

Spurred on by their success plans were made for the following year, this time the numbers were doubled and approx 300 marchers walked from Stone Cross, Carters Green.

The year 2002 saw the numbers double again and this time 600 marchers followed the same route as the previous year. It was much the same story in 2003 as again the numbers doubled on the annual pilgrimage from Stone Cross to Carters Green bringing us up to 2004.

Last year saw a tremendous resurgence in patriotism with a record 4800 marchers including three bands marching from The Golden Lion Pub to Dartmouth Park, West Bromwich to a full compliment of side shows, market stalls and entertainment.

There were numerous reasons for the unparalleled success of last years march, mainly the hard work undertaken by the committee advertising and promoting the event. The collaboration and involvement of local celebrity and historian Professor Carl Chinn helped to raise the profile of the event. Finally Sandwell Council bowed to public pressure and recognised the event to such an extent that the 2005 parade will be billed as Sandwell Council in conjunction with The Stone Cross St. Georges Association. This will be undoubtedly the biggest event of it`s kind in the country.
